The Pharaoh Hound, or Il Kelb Tal-Fenek (the dog of the rabbit), originated in Malta and has been in existence for over 2,000 years. Bred to hunt rabbits on the harsh Maltese Islands , he is fast and agile which in modern days makes him a willing and talented participant of hunting and lure-coursing events. It is not unusual for the Pharaoh hound to be compared or mistaken for other Mediterranean sight hounds. This is understandable, due to similarities in body type, facial structure and the obvious willingness to hunt shared by many of these Mediterranean hounds. However, the pharaoh has the unmistakable deep, rich red coat coloring and the charming blushing trait. The blushing will be seen on the Pharaohs ears and face when excited, with many owners 'training' the dog to blush on command.

Like most of the Mediterranean Sight hounds, the Pharaoh is an elegant, exotic looking dog, with a sharp, intelligent expression. Not only beautiful on the outside, he is pure gold within, having the kind, gentle essence that you will find in most hounds. However, a spirited dog he is, keeping his owner on their toes with his playful nature. So while he will adjust to a town lifestyle, adequate exercise must be given to maintain a happy, healthy hound. Due to his extreme fondness and willingness to hunt, problems can arise if he if has not been thoroughly trained to 'come', with his natural instinct to chase often overriding his willingness to obey. However, a well trained Pharaoh is a delight to have around, with his bubbly personality being infectious to all.
Not only a popular lure courser, he has proven himself to be a real star at agility, radiating exuberance and joy as he leaps and weaves his way deep into your heart. Given the chance he will excel in anything you ask of him, being a true athlete and performer. However, don't be discouraged by the sound of this energetic extrovert, he is, after all, a hound and cuddling up with his best friend is surely his favorite past time!
